Brisbane to Broome Veteran Rally Jul/Aug 2022

We have entered to ride in this mammoth East to West Veteran vehicle rally across the top of Australia this year. We will also be taking a few weeks at each end to drive to and from the rally. This means we will be closing our workshop from the end of June to the end of August.
Andrew is madly building a 1914 Pope single for the run and I’ll be riding my 1910 Triumph. It’s about 4670km in the saddle plus only 8 or 9 thousand km travelling to/from so we’ll be back all refreshed in September to crack on with your orders.

We're Not Doing This Forever

Hi to all our valued clients - Vintage Steel will soon be For Sale

We would like to plan to retire from our Motorcycle Mudguard Manufacturing business. We are in the 6th year of our 5 year plan and still growing.

Andrew and I have been serving restorers all over the world and Vintage Steel now has an enviable reputation for the quality and accuracy of its reproductions.  We would like to focus a little more on some of our own projects and ride our bikes more often so we have decided to either seek the future owners of this little gem or bring in a new partner.

What This Means to a Restorer:

If you have an important project in mind that you would like us to make mudguards or fenders for, it may be wise to get your order in early.  At some point we are going to stop making guards and there is almost no-one else in the world doing it.  If we find a suitable buyer for the business, it will likely be relocated to their premises and go through some transition and training period.  Andrew and I will both be taking about two months off in 2022 to travel 13,000kms around Australia which will include 4,700km on Veteran bikes riding Brisbane to Broome.  This will cause some delays in production next year.

What This Means to a Buyer:

If you ever thought you’d like to work in the field of your hobby, we can both testify to the many rewards this business has given us.  We have met some amazing people and been given opportunities we would never have guessed at.  Over time we have amassed a vast amount of data and knowledge and have become widely consulted as subject matter experts in this field.  The biggest bonus is the growing network of contacts and clients we regard as friends.

The workshop needs only about 100sqm or 1000sqft.  The main rolling machine can use any of 58 sets of custom CNC machined rollers for making the mudguard blades we call blanks.  After this the work begins to convert the blank into a Norton, Indian, AJS or whatever it needs to be.  For this we have over 220 Valance templates, 90+ press tools,  90+ original sample guards, 70+ cutting templates, 50+ sets of bead roller dies as well as an array of hand tools.  Other powered equipment includes 3 bead rollers, sheet metal shears, spot welder, mig welder, drill press, compressor and pneumatic hammer plus a large sheet metal guillotine.  Major hand tools include 2 bead rollers, sheet rollers, bender, shears and 2 hydraulic presses.  There are racks, benches and shelves to suit as well as a complete office with filing cabinet full of drawings and a very comprehensive website linked to facebook and Instagram pages.  It will all fit in a 40’ sea container for transport.

This business is not for you if you like getting stressed. Even though we have the capability, we have had to learn to say no to many requests for additional work like petrol and oil tanks, chainguards, primary covers and mudguard stays. There is also a growing demand for a number of mudguards we haven’t had time to make yet. The reason is, we enjoy making the mudguards that no-one else can make, at our own pace, and making them really well.
This could be for you if you like to restore, ride or talk bikes and cars or just like dealing with people who like bikes and cars. You may even have to force yourself to go on club rides and be prepared to attend auctions / shows / events / swap meets all over the world to talk bikes, just to make sure you don’t get stressed.

We anticipate new owners would need a 2 week training period here and a further 2 weeks once relocated.   It can be a stand-alone business or a great add-on to another workshop. Neither of us is desperate to move on so we could be part of your transition plan for longer.

Is there someone you know who may be interested?  You can let us know HERE. I’d really like to know that mudguards will be available for my future projects I haven’t even started yet.

Regards

Michael Rock

Change of Name - Australian National Veteran Motorcycle Rally 2021

It’s still on, but different….
Our local club (Indian Harley Club (Bunbury) Inc) was hosting the National Veteran Motorcycle Rally based in Manjimup WA from 17-22 October 2021. Due to ongoing Covid international travel restrictions and recent east coast Covid outbreaks, this has become impossible for most entrants so the Rally will go ahead as the WA Veteran Rally 2021.

I can guarantee the whole week of veteran riding through the forests of South West WA will be entirely out of reach of traffic lights.

Here’s the announcement: WA Veteran Rally 2021
When:                     Sunday 17th October to Friday 22nd October 2021
Where:                    Manjimup, Western Australia
Headquarters:       Tigers Football Clubrooms, 40 Collier Street, Manjimup
Format:                   Day runs of around 120km from the rally headquarters
Roads:                     Country, undulating hilly
Attractions:           85% of the Shire of Manjimup is State Forest, Reserve or National Park, along with the Manjimup region and its surrounds classed as the food bowl of Western Australia.  Manjimup is rich with fine produce including local wines, avocados, roasted chestnuts, cheese, ginseng, green tea, black truffles, and marron.   The famous “Pink Lady” and “Sundowner” apples were created by John Cripps in Manjimup

Various accommodations are available from B & B’s to Holiday Houses, Motels, Hotels, and Caravan Parks.  As well as Manjimup and surrounds, there is also Pemberton which is 32km and Bridgetown is 38kms from Manjimup.

Ern Serls Collection Sold

2021 saw the sale of the late Ern Serls’ collection of 13 running motorcycles plus projects and parts. Ernie, as we knew him, was a respected font of knowledge on all things Ariel and was well known for having very reliable and well sorted bikes. I don’t recall ever seeing one of his bikes on a backup trailer, in fact I’m sure he would have hidden in the bush if he ever broke down rather than tarnish the Ariel name. They all sold very quickly and the parts were split into two smaller collections, the pre 1930’s parts going to Victoria and the remainder is still local here in the South West of WA. The project bikes plus 12 of the 13 running bikes sold within WA with only one escaping to the ACT.

USA Visit Jan/Feb 2020

It has taken us about six weeks to recover from our three weeks away in the USA. We’re nearly on top of our follow-up communications and we are slowly catching up with Christmas orders. We resisted temptation and no bikes came home to Aus with us. What an experience, we saw nearly 2000 classic motorcycles change hands over 6 days and spoke to hundreds of restorers, collectors and dealers. The week following the auction saw us visiting a number of private collections and workshops around California that would be the envy of most Motor Museum curators. We came away in awe of the sheer scale and quality of the historic motorcycle movement in the USA. We enjoyed a very generous welcome and made many new friends so we know we will return!
Sadly we lost one day’s list of names and email addresses from the Mecum auction in Las Vegas that didn’t save. Hopefully if we missed getting back to you, you are now reading this and maybe you could forgive us and make contact again.

MECUM Auction Las Vegas 21-25 Jan 2020

We are booked to go !!
We’re now committed to jump the puddle and visit the USA with our wares to show at the Mecum Motorcycle Auction in Vegas.
https://www.mecum.com/auctions/las-vegas-motorcycle-2020/
Because we’ll be taking a crate of fenders with us, we’re offering free delivery to the Auction for any fenders ordered before 30 August 2019. Looking forward to meeting you there.

National Veteran Rally - Tasmania 10-15 March 2019

We’re off to Tasmania on a compulsory work trip doing some Market and Product Research. We have to take our oldest bikes and participate in some marketing activities while we are there. This also means shutting down the workshop for a couple of weeks so there may be some delays with orders arriving after mid February. (Pictures from the 2017 National Veteran Rally - Nuriootpa SA.)

Bendigo Swapmeet 2018

Our busiest swap-meet ever, hundreds of enquiries and a fistful of orders taken for new mudguards and fenders. There was a good scattering of vintage and veteran projects and even complete bikes and cars on offer. We’ll be back in 2019, same building (BEC) maybe a different spot. Thanks go to Franc Trento @ Eurobrit Motorbikes in Melbourne for his generous logistic support.

Australian National Veteran Rally

Wow, what a great week of touring the Barossa Valley on century old bikes. Over 140 riders with over 200 bikes made the trek to South Australia in September.  We just got back from the 6000km round trip to be a part of this major rally. Andrew took his 1910 Norton and 1913 Yale,  I had my 1910 Triumph and 1918 Reading Standard. Even if you didn't get to ride, the bikes, the atmosphere and camaraderie is worth the trip.
